I created this piece after visiting a Citizenship Workshop at the Tukwila office of the International Rescue Committee. Individuals and families who had been in the country for several years were embarking on the process of applying for United States citizenship. With the aid of volunteers, people from all over the world filled out the application's detailed paperwork. I enjoyed how well this woman's New York City tourist T-shirt complemented her hijab. This sartorial combination was visually striking and emblematic of the diversity of heritage and identity that I value in our country. –Artist statement
