Suegra (Mother in Law)

I did this piece for a series of Calaveras Migrantes. Calaveras, from the Latinx tradition Día de Muertos, are decorated skulls inviting a temporary return of the dead to the world of the living. I use calaveras as a theme in my art to point to a greater reality beyond our temporary mortal existence. I am also elevating the lives of women and their struggle. This piece depicts my Suegra (mother-in-law). The skull is a also a pocket, and flowers or other offerings can be placed inside. –Artist statement
