Description: The Monolith station greets visitors at the beginning of the path, and it provides a standing space for individuals or group to gather. The sculpture, encourages visitors to remember—as individuals and as a community—those who were and are still impacted by HIV/AIDS, and to begin the journey along the path of reflection and remembrance.

MOMENTS_MEMORIES_STORIES

HIV/AIDS came to the LGBTQ and other communities silently, but violently. To some, it was a meteoric event, as if a piece of the sky had crashed into earth and impacted their lives forever. As a broken shard of light, the Monolith also resembles an excavated ancient standing stone, bearing witness to the pandemic. It calls on the visitors to remember -- moments, memories and stories -- of individuals and communities who were and are impacted by HIV/AIDS, and to begin the journey along the path of reflection and remembrance.

About the Ribbon of Light artworks:  The sculptures represent pieces of the sky that have broken into fragments and fallen to the ground. These artworks illuminate our communal mourning and embody the ephemeral, changing, and shifting nature of grief. Visitors are invited to walk along this pathway for reflection and contemplation among the three stations. Simple words— “murmurs” — are engraved onto the surface and embedded inside the layers, to encourage visitors to explore their feelings connected to different aspects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Location: Cal Anderson Park, 1635 11th Avenue, Seattle WA 98122 (Northeast Corner of Park)
