After moving to Seattle in 1979 after three years of art studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, Beecher began to use found objects in her art making. She collected whatever looked to be potential art materials. “I became enamored of products that were used and discarded, particularly soda and tin can graphics. I began the folk art of ‘quilting’ different pieces of soda cans together, mixing color combinations. This was a way of recycling aluminum, of cleaning the city. I was attracted to the challenge of making a throw away into something much more beautiful and beyond what the object was intended to be used for.” –Artist statement
