Description: Meadowbrook Reflective Refuge is a storm water detention pond transformed by artists into a sensory environment. Surrounded by a series of sculptured, landscaped earth berms, the pond is a refuge from the surrounding city. It contains a series of environmental features focusing attention on the changing seasons and the sight and sounds of water. Mosaic-embellished pathways wind through the site, leading the visitor to a “sound sanctuary,” a sound mirror and a flood pool. Whimsical architectural elements reflect in the water and lead visitors over streams and to the water’s edge.
Artist Statement: The installation is a collaborative work of art, architecture and landscape architecture. An earthwork integrating structure, earth and pond as sculpture, it is effected and transformed by light, seasons and weather, creating ever-changing moods, textures and colors. Removed from the urban setting, this landform shelter serves to focus and connect one physically and emotionally with nature.
