As a college student, Ricketts began to work with imagery that reflected the decaying industrial past of the East Coast where she grew up.  This led to research into the history of cities and their evolution, such as the tension between the ideal visions of urban planning and the actual haphazard evolution of a place due to economics, industry, and geography.  From source material she gathers (snapshots, maps, city plans, and aerial and satellite photos), she seeks a synthesis of information to address the complexity of the urban environment.
