The shapes and earth tones of this painting are typical of Anderson's work and refer to the unity of life-forms, with symbolic, swirling forms and floating figures blended in a cosmos of inter-related mass.  The swimmer is one of the central images of Anderson's paintings, a lone figure floating atop a squall of swirling brushstrokes and color.  The cellular shapes enclosing his figures are derived from Pacific Northwest Indian art as well as Asian philosophies.
