I use images of less majestic scenes to emphasize the beauty of the detail in the more banal aspects of nature. By using close-up, woodland scenes, I am attempting to draw the viewer inward, to see their own place. I begin my work by photographing the dense foliage of the forest floor in the woods around Northwest Washington. I take from these close-up photos the light and dark structure that forms the basis or their realistic image and transfer it to the linoleum block, before cutting it. Underbrush 11 was made from a photo taken next to Piper's Creek in Carkeek Park in Northwest Seattle. –Artist statement
