Description: The artist created a unique fence, consisting of layered, vinyl covered cyclone fencing, supported by hidden cables so that the shapes and patterns appear to be suspended. The fence layers are red, yellow, and green. The substation site is triangular and bordered by streets on all three sides. Fence patterns along the heavily traveled Broad Street are larger, and visible from a distance; the shapes on the other two sides of the station are more visible to sidewalk pedestrians. The fence patterns on the south side resemble houses connected by narrow bands, suggesting the journey of electrical power from the substation to the customer. The fence is 10 feet high and 75 feet long on the Broad Street side. The artist also designed cutouts in an existing concrete wall on the east side of the facility, to allow views of the substation interior and of the electrical equipment, which had not previously been visible.
Artist Statement: I wanted to create a variety of subtle yet distinctive visual experiences that worked with the technical needs of the substation, while expressing my own artistic views.
