Description: Visitors to the library ascending or descending the escalator connecting the Fifth Avenue lobby with the Fifth floor will pass by a hole in the sheetrock which provides them a glimpse into an unexpected cavity filled with four video sculptures. Amid the exposed “bones” of the building the passerby can see a tableau of faces and individual features projected onto three dimensional forms and semi-transparent Plexiglas. Softly spoken words of poetry seem to emanate from the disembodied forms, adding a mysterious aura to the work. Additionally, a porthole in the opposite wall reveals a view into the hallway beyond allowing for the possibility of a real face joining the artistic landscape. In all, Braincast is meant to be a work which inspires contemplation upon the transmission of information while reflecting upon the tradition of the public library and its expanding role as the transmitter of myriad information in spoken, printed, recorded and digital form.
