Having spent part of my childhood in Misawa, Japan, I have long been interested in traditional Japanese artwork and creating images with a hushed dream-like mood. I want to create an image that functions much like a haiku poem. With relatively simple means, I want to evoke a tangible mood that sucks the viewer in. I'm creating a place somewhere between reality and a dream world, someplace to pause and gather one's thoughts. Many of the elements in my paintings have personal meaning for me, but some are decorative. Rather than creating a strict narrative I prefer a slightly ambiguous image, which allows the viewer to create his or her own story.
Inspiration for Melting Pot came from the local landscape and the cloud motif frequently used in traditional Japanese painting. I hope to capture the feeling of our long, gray, rainy days while exploring an array of shapes and textures that I can use to form the clouds. –Artist statement
