Impressionistic strokes are used to convey the atmospheric attitude of this painting, suggesting a gray day filled with the subtle colors of vegetation and terrain.  The diagonal line conveyed by the embankment draws the viewer's eye deep into the landscape.  William Hixson has shown extensively in the Northwest, having taught at the University of Washington from 1950 to 1990.
