Elston paints en plein air (in the outdoors, from life), but also uses sketches, photographs and video material to develop his paintings in the studio. His work takes place within a modern tradition of figurative realism that began in the first half of the 19th Century. The Realist believes that life and experience are a source of pleasure and joy, and the act of painting is both a meditation on and a savoring of life experience.
