A collage is commonly used to mean a picture that is made of bits of paper, fabric or any other material stuck to a surface.  In French the word literally means 'gluing' or 'sticking,' and was first introduced by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in 1912 during their phase of synthetic Cubism.
