The artist describes her artistic philosophy as, Follow your vision and observe, observe, observe. Do works about the things you have experienced and your feelings about them; use your strengths. If you draw well, use drawing. If you are a colorist, use that skill. Whatever you do best, use that, then work on your weaknesses. Primarily a figurative painter, she gains inspiration from West African sculpture because it is powerful and mystical. With her own sculpture, she found that the exploration of 3-dimensional form added significantly to her understanding of the creative process.
I was born in Barbados and moved with my family to the United States when I was seven. My memories of the Caribbean are the blue sea, the scent of flowers and the warm sun. These things make me feel Caribbean and I hope they are symbolic in my paintings. -From Gwen Knight’s artist statement questionnaire for the Catalogue: Caribbean Visions; Contemporary Painting and Sculpture, September 1995, Art Services International.
