Knight's self-reliance can be attributed, at least in part, to the difficulty she expressed in finding support and encouragement as a woman artist in Harlem, New York in the 30s and 40s.When she was in school, Knight says her teachers just didn't push women artists. They had to push themselves. Knight's interest in dance and physical expression additionally influenced her painting and prints. Dance is the way I draw, the way I work. I am interested in gesture.
