Description: A wall-mounted cast aluminum high relief sculpture on stained fiberboard, “Water Borne” was created with the assistance of young people at the community center and was developed through the NEA funds.
Artists’ Statement: This project began in 1992 in the first stages of planning for the new community center. We met often with the Bitter Lake community while developing our ideas. We also conducted a workshop about the processes involved in casting aluminum artwork with teenagers from the Bitter Lake Community Center After School Program. It included experimenting with various relief design, group critiques, a visit to a foundry, modeling with clay and casting demonstrations. At the conclusion we used the designs developed during the workshop to make the patterns used for casting the work in aluminum. The design were inspired by NW Coast Indian wood carvings and take the form of water under a wood canoe that might have been used on the waters of Bitter Lake. This is one of five community center projects that Beliz and Mark worked on using recycled aluminum.
