Over There

Crows are everywhere in Seattle, and yet we mostly ignore them. They swoop down to steal our food, dive bomb us when we get too close to their nests, and strut through our streets with their shiny black feathers. My work looks at our relationships to each other through directing our attention to these feathered friends. When do we ignore what is right in front of us, whether that’s a crow, gentrification, or house-lesness? How do we learn to witness the world together, collaborate, and take action to stop more suffering? Can the caws of the crows call us back into our humanity? As messengers between this world and other realms, crows can offer us messages if only we listen. What magic can happen if we widen our kin circle to include crows?

These two crows are bearing witness to what humans do in this world, and are inviting us to do the same. Their gazes are slightly different from one another, as they take in different aspects of our worlds. What can we learn from the crow’s eye view that might change our limited human perspective? –Artist statement
