In all my work with the artists for this series it had to be a two-way street. They opened their doors and I walked in with their trust in my hands. At the time this photograph was taken, Richard Gilkey was living in Seattle. Later he moved back to the Skagit Valley where he often painted outdoors. He lived on Fir Island in an old house, later adding a studio. From this area he captured the magnificent landscape of the Skagit Valley. –Artist statement
