In 2004, as a part of the Northwest Masters project, thirty-one photographs by Mary Randlett were purchased. The images in this collection were taken by Randlett between the years 1949 and 1991. Most of the purchased gelatin silver prints were portraits of local artists.
Jacob Lawrence was an internationally known painter who also taught for many years at the University of Washington. I photographed Jacob several times, however I took this photograph for a New York art magazine. He is shown standing on his staircase on the way to his attic studio in his Seattle home. Behind him is the well-known painting he did of himself standing on the same staircase, surrounded by his work. In the windows of his painting, he painted the houses of Harlem. In my photograph, there are no houses visible. –Artist statement
