An apparently calm still life is portrayed here with a slightly crazy edge. The dream-like strangeness of the scene is borrowed from the Surrealist artists of the earlier part of the twentieth century. When asked to define the movement, one of Surrealism's founders replied: A chance meeting of a sewing machine and an umbrella on a dissecting table. This scene is not so very different.
