My work involves mixing image and artifact – photography and the plastic arts. There is a blurring of distinctions today between image and artifact, and I reference that by burning my photographs onto clay, the oldest repository of writing. Artifacts reference history, both personal and epochal. In both my personal work and in my collaboration with my wife, Yonnah, I work in layers. In this assemblage, I even recessed the different compartments at different depths. The statue is of Captain John Smith of Jamestown. Next to the flag tile is an image from Brittania Mine in British Columbia. –Artist statement
