Yola is a patchwork boat that Dominicans use to reach Puerto Rico in search of a new life. I spent two years in the DR serving in the Peace Corps and was often disheartened when the people spent their life savings on these dangerous voyages in search of a better life. This work shows the mix of human emotions during this journey and the bills (cut into fish shapes) and coins represent their losses below the sea. My science background motivates me to highlight natural realms. Themes of love, diversity, social equality, and science are also woven into my work. –Artist statement
