The image in Smoke Hole references the story Raven Steals the Light, a story shared among many Northwest Coast nations. The tale depicts how the world once was shrouded in complete darkness until a mischievous raven disguised himself as a human child to trick an old man who selfishly kept all the daylight for himself. The old man kept the daylight in a box, but through persistent coaxing allowed the child to play with the light. As he tossed the ball of light the child transformed into the cunning Raven who escaped with the light through the old man’s smoke hole, up into the sky where he released it into the daylight which illuminates us to this day. –Artist statement
