The panoramic pinhole photograph, Downstream, contains contrasting aspects of the importance of water. The south fork of the Salmon River harbors an important population of anadromous Chinook salmon that depend on pristine waters for spawning. And yet, the river is flowing through a stand of charred timber from a recent fire – a fire promoted by reduced rainfall and rising temperatures. A pinhole camera brings out my creativity, and the long exposure times that blur and soften action, impart a dream-like quality to captured images that appeals to my aesthetic as an artist. –Artist statement
