The Opera Committee of the Seattle Jewish Center gave this work to the City in 1963. Dybbuk is a Hebrew word meaning disembodied spirit, a spirit of a dead person who invades a living person.  In 1920 Polish author Sholom Anski wrote a play called The Dybbuk which was subsequently made into a film and later (in the 1970's) a ballet with music written by Leonard Bernstein.
