The Columbia Street entrance ramp to the Alaska Way Viaduct has a beautiful sculptural and architectural quality that changes character depending upon the time and season. The shadows and highlights present on the ramp also transform depending upon the natural light, and on the day I painted the work the ramp appeared strikingly white instead of the expected grey. I attempted to capture that effect within Not For Long to reinvent the perspective of Seattle’s local infrastructure. As a native West Seattleite, the Viaduct is a sacred lifeline to downtown Seattle and provides a beautiful view of the expansive vistas of the Pacific NW that surround our metropolis. –Artist statement
