Face With Dots

I was wrestling with the idea of keeping a distinct face in profile, yet filling it with a pattern.  Why put a profile on a vase?  I like the way the face looms up on the vessel, like an Easter Island icon.  Why paint on glass?  Well, why paint on canvas?  Why paint faces?  Because I spend my life looking into faces.  Why put faces on vases?  Because the vessel form is archetypal -- it goes way, way back.  Finally, why make a face filled with dots?  Because I want to keep the human face recognizable yet not, specific yet not, clear yet not. –Artist statement
