Born in 1946 in Everett, Washington and undergraduate of Yale University in 1968, Dick Weiss is one of the noted glass artists working in the Northwest. He is a frequent artist in residence at Pilchuck and around the world. Stained glass is an ancient medium. I like its sense of history. . . I think a lot about various paintings I have seen. In the case of this piece, I was thinking about the Chicago Funk group of the 50s and 60s, the 'Hairy Who'. . . I've never really loved those squishy, swirly blobs, but they have stayed fixed in my memory blanks. The tree is an outgrowth of that undulating movement. –Artist statement
