Artist Statement: Uptown is a unique neighborhood because it melds the experiences of residential comfort with tourism bustle. I was first inspired by the neighborhood’s history and how it maintains a cozy, neighborly vibe despite being nestled within Seattle Center. I set out to photograph “a day in the life” of Uptown’s essential workers – from both the worker and bystander perspectives. The use of (or lack of) masks and social distancing have shifted how both tourists and locals engage with storefronts, landscapes, and public art. This shift has changed the community at large and so I decided to also try to capture the new vibe of the area’s day-to-day experience.
