The globe (or bulb) used to make the original print is 22 inches tall and is made for use in a 20,000 watt tungsten motion picture lamp. Tungsten refers to the color temperature or color of the light it produces.
This image was made from a photogram. Photograms are made by putting an object directly onto light sensitive photo paper and exposing it to light; creating a "shadow" of the subject. Since silver gelatin paper creates a reverse image, this image is a negative image of the bulb. Using this process to record the incandescent lamp instead of a camera lens allowed for much more visual information to be captured in the print. The bulb is made of clear glass but on the print one can see a grid pattern; this is due to the different densities in the glass.
