The elements in this piece are minimal: Cedar and mirrored stainless steel. Cedar beams are placed rhythmically, standing an element of nature. This piece returns these cedar beams to the river as an echo of the tree shape they once held. The beams stand as historical markers; monuments to a fading past. Sheets of stainless steel mirror cover the face of the beams facing toward the pathway. The viewers see themselves and the surrounding environment reflected; as they move forward, each beam disappears into the reflection. When we add ourselves into the space, we see ourselves playfully reflected but the act of adding ourselves is also an act of removal of the natural element. As the viewers continue along the path toward the river the beams lose height and disappear into the earth. There is an uneasiness to the opening of the landscape and what has been removed as we walk down the path.
This piece presents a question and a challenge of how to continue to grow, develop, and evolve with sensitivity to the impact we leave. The intention is as much about our environment as it is about our individual life journeys and the effect on those around us.
