Originally, this work along with several clay suikinkutsu sonic chambers was created to flank a persimmon sapling I am growing. The sapling is a descendent of a “hibaku” tree that survived the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. The seeds of survivor trees have been distributed to over 30 different countries through Green Legacy Hiroshima to recall the threat of mass destruction and the hope for ecological resilience. Such images of peace must be presented with the greatest of discretion and trepidation. But I believe we must present them so that we never forget, so that we both mourn and reconfigure our practices of living into the future. –Artist statement
