There is a long tradition of still life in the history of art. Most people are familiar with the arrangements of flowers, tools, and food that have been painted by artists for centuries. But for some artists in the late twentieth century who are working with a mechanical means of reproduction (the camera) and in a time after the innovations of abstraction have changed the way we see and think about art, a new kind of still life is in order. One which looks mechanical and abstract yet works within the tradition of still life as a formal arrangement of elements.
