Description: Thirty vertical “shields” of mosaic panels by artist Linda Haworth are attached to the fence posts of an existing chain link fence along Roosevelt Way NE in Seattle. Each shield is an 8” by 120” aluminum form filled with a panel of approximately 4,320 tiny 3/8” pieces of mosaic handmade, hand cut glass. Nine of the multi-colored panels have outlines of maple leaves.
Haworth states: “I have always been interested in diversity of scale and the impact on human sensory experiences. After spending time at Maple Leaf and listening to community members describe their desires, I came to visualize an installation that could be enjoyed both by people in cars and by those with the time to walk by. Those hurrying by in cars will absorb the great spectrum of color in the 30 shields, even if just in their peripheral vision. Pedestrians will be able to touch the mosaics, and discover individual bits of glass inclusions that cannot be seen from a distance.”
