In many artworks, perhaps most particularly in black and white photographs, the image can be seen both as a depiction of a time and place and an arrangement of shape and light. What makes this scene interesting to look at is not its subject (a pile of dirt on a construction site), but how the photograph makes one see the place through the manipulation of darkness, light  and the arrangement of the objects within the rectangle of the picture.
