Originally, tapestries were made to convey stories as well as cover, decorate and insulate the cold stone walls of  European castles. Here, a modern day cousin of the traditional woven wall hanging tells no story, opting instead for the presentation of geometric patterns seemingly lit by the dim light of distant stars.  Beginning in the seventies, fabric art flourished in the craft-friendly Northwest.  In works like this there was an attempt to blend traditional techniques, particularly the so-called woman's crafts of sewing and weaving, with the formal concerns of contemporary abstract art.
