After moving to Seattle in 1979 after three years of art studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, Beecher began to use found objects in her art making. She collected whatever looked to be potential art materials. Here the artist uses the look of a traditional quilt pattern, but updates the concept by constructing it out of chocolate tins and taillight reflector lenses. Traditional quilts were pieced together out of left over and discarded scraps of cloth. They became hand crafted expressions of practicality, frugality and a home spun form of recycling that extended the life and usefulness of materials which otherwise would have been wasted.
