Fay Chong was born in Canton, China and emigrated to the United States where he attended the University of Washington. He studied privately with Mark Tobey and was part of Seattle's WPA Federal Art Project along with artists such as Morris Graves, Tobey, Hans Bok, Jacob Elshin, and Helmi Juvonen. He produced numerous paintings and linocuts for the project. This small woodcut landscape is reminiscent of Chong's work at the time.
