Engle's parents were artists and avid collectors of sculpture from Japan, Indonesia, the South Pacific and Africa. When he was a teenager, his family took an extended trip throughout the South Pacific visiting the Samoas, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia.  Later, he traveled extensively in Europe and along the West coast of Africa.  After studying painting and sculpture in California, Indiana, New York and Pennsylvania and receiving his degrees in art, he moved to Seattle, and later Ashland, Oregon to be in the midst of the powerful influences gradually appearing in my work. –Artist statement
