Maynard is of the Penelakut and Kwagiulth ancestry. He is self-taught and one of the leading young artists whose passion for their Coast Salish culture has helped launch the current renaissance of the southern tribes of the Pacific Northwest Coast region. The elegance of line and boldness of color in Johnny's art has made an important contribution in bringing these ancient forms into the contemporary realm.
