As a mixed, Asian-American queer woman of color, I have long been interested in where identities meet. Where ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, culture, and gender are defined and blur. The Black Lives Matter movement is the defining social justice movement of our time. One pivotal moment was Black Friday 2014, when protesters shut down the tree lighting ceremony and forced the city to think about the life-and-death issue of state violence against Black lives. This image is from that night. –Artist statement
