The subject of this print is the edge of a mass of basalt rock that was formed after flowing out of the earth as lava. The medium of woodcut, with its strong graphic quality, reinforces my efforts to speak through the textures and forms of the violent geological activity that brought these massive deposits into existence. The hours spent carving the woodblocks become a kind of textural experience as I map the surfaces of the rock, exploring the abstract shapes. . . –Artist statement
