This painting depicts a wooden box in the Museum of History and Industry’s collection. The box was built by Washington resident K. Iwasaki to ship belongings home from a Japanese internment camp. With this work, I hoped to relay the tension that can be found in commonplace artifacts associated with a historical moment wrapped up in violence and trauma. –Artist statement
