…I chose the myths of transformation, and pictographic images from the reservation. Using rocks from the reservation as a mold, I inserted pictographs cut from copper foil.  Copper is one of the only metals that will retain its identity in molten glass.  The Merman consists of two pieces, each from the same rock mold. However, the Merman is a creature of duality- both man and sea spirit. This is enchanting to mankind, represented by the female figure. She chooses to leave her safe earth world, with the soil centering her life. Seduced by the wonders of the unknown, she flies into the underwater world on the back of a compassionate sea bird, to join her lover. By this act, she becomes enchanted, transforming into a spirit no longer confined to a human body. –Artist statement
