Description: “Plynth” and “Pylon” are a pair of landmarks located at each end of the new boulevard island along the Beacon V improvement.  “Plynth” and “Pylon” are subtle stainless steel gateways that frame the “Vista” project.  “Pylon” is vertically placed and appears as an open book or perhaps a pair of wings, while “Plynth” looks similar, but horizontally situated.  The pieces are uplit at night, welcoming visitors.

Artist Statement: Each stainless steel landmark is incised with waterjet cut calligraphy created by Alex Wu. By deconstructing the characters from a Confucian proverb ‘Under Heaven we must work together for the common good’ and repositioning them according to the laws of chance, the final design resembles an artful if indecipherable skein. The resultant brushed finished latticework creates a subtle dynamism for passing traffic through the filtering of ambient light.

Location: Beacon Avenue South between South Spokane Street & South Alaska Street, Seattle WA  98144
