Adelita is symbolic of the woman rebel; this piece references a woman from the Mexican Revolution. The glyphs on Adelita’s dress refer to her ancient past, and the strength, resilience, creativity, and intellectual power she draws from her culture. I am a Mexican-American artist. As a former architect, I have a deep appreciation for the built environment and how people relate to it. I am also drawn to nature. The interplay between these two worlds is at the heart of my work. I have a desire to seek out forgotten histories of people and places and highlight them. I hope to shed light on little-known stories and detail the beauty of our different experiences, cultures, and beliefs, while celebrating our humanity. –Artist statement
