Familial Attachments is from a series of works on paper entitled Sea of Famine. The Sea of Famine references the construction of the Nampho dam which closed off the Taedong river to the Yellow Sea in North Korea.  While the North Korean government built the dam as a major engineering accomplishment to showcase to the world, it is widely believed that the dam caused massive flooding, destroying thousands of acres of arable farmland. The loss of critical farmland led to the Great Famine of the 1990s. The bears reference the Dangun Creation myth, which is the story of how the first ruler of the kingdom of Korea was descended from a bear-woman and son of a god. –Artist statement
