The word Blackfish is a translation of ma’xi’nuxwk in the ancient Kwakwala language, which is now interpreted as Killer Whale. They are regarded as our ‘family under the sea’ and are greatly respected for their strength and community style of living. We have many stories of our interactions with Blackfish throughout our history.

People who use Blackfish as a clan symbol have deep origin stories and strong spiritual bonds with them.–Artist statement
