La Diosa Serpiente draws inspiration from the powerful sculpture of Coatlicue, goddess of the Mexica. Known as the earth mother and creator, Coatlicue gave birth to Huitzilopochtli, the god of war, depicted as a hummingbird. I’ll always remember when I first saw the monumental basalt sculpture at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. In this painting, I reimagine the serpent and the hummingbird, using bright colors and flowing forms to capture movement and explore themes of life, death, and rebirth. The hummingbird floats within the vibrant composition, highlighting the spiritual connection to nature found in Mesoamerican beliefs. –Artist statement
